Beginner's Guitar Circle and Open Mic
Beginners will be given 1st priority at this meet. More advanced players will most definitely be welcomed if there are any unfilled slots.
OK folks, this meet is designed with the beginner and uncomfortable intermediate guitar player / singer in mind, as a direct result of the discussion that has been taking place in the "Beginners Forum".
Being nervous is natural!!! We're going to try to alleviate a little of that nervousness by limiting the meet to just a few members (for this reason no "Maybe" RSVP's are being accepted), and giving you the opportunity to play thru a PA in a private, safe setting. Get comfortable with the folks around you, and realize that you are not alone. A few, more experienced folks will be here to help you out, give some tips and share some experiences.
We will also have a guitar circle, everyone will be allowed to lead some tunes if they want. Nobody has to do anything they don't want to do.
What to bring?
BYOB
Bring a simple 3 or 4 open chord song with you, that you would like to play w/ 10 copies if possible (I'll be happy to make copies if not)
Your guitar (preferably an electric acoustic if available, but I can mic an acoustic also)
Music stand
Hopefully it will be a beautiful evening and we can play out on the patio. If it's raining or just too hot we'll be indoor.
Look forward to seeing you here.
Remember, this all about having fun with the music you love.

Suggestion 2) I would *really* like to cover technology in music at some point. Like, computer programs to compose music, edit music, translate chords & melody to sheet music. Also, analog technology-- how to make recordings of your music. Then, analog to digital-- covering MIDI, how to turn analog recordings into digital recordings, incl. mp3s. How to potentially collaborate on songwriting w/ people remotely via computer/Internet. Uploading to youtube. (Just a few ideas!)
Thanks!
Camille
Hi again, just thought I'd post a couple of suggestons for future beginner-intermediate meetups. (Thanks again for doin these!)
Suggestion 1) I wonder if there is a place-- website-- where we could all upload our individual collections of chords of songs. That way, we could all print em out & practice em before the next meetup.
Had a terrific time! (All apart from one of our hosts hating animals & being environmentally unconscious... .) I'M KIDDING!!! No, thank you guys so much for being such lovely & hospitable hosts! Including your sweet, poor little doggie! It was very nice meeting everyone. The musical atmostphere was great for people who were a little shy & rusty (like me). I liked it best when we were all informally trying out different songs towards the end.
Camille (aka SaturnCat) :)
Ok, I can't find an easy way to send everyone an email. The website I was talking about that is great for beginners to intermediates: www.justinguitar.com ... it's free (the guy does take donations, but you can access everything).
@Adam--I have a video camera but it's much easier and faster just to shoot video with my digital still camera & download quickly to a computer. However, very easy to find barre chords and such on YouTube. Good meeting you last night!
Hey all,
Mucho thanks to Mike, Bev, and Lilly. Bev I do like your dog :) Had a great time seeing new faces and sharing and learning. Our beginner guitar clinics will begin in August. We will tackle a number of topics to improve, and make it easier and more enjoyable to play your guitar. We will ease into the barre chords and look at various open chord configurations and find which work best for all. Guitar care will also be a topic. Have fun, and just play!
Huge thanks to everyone that came out, Bev,I and the "Rat" had a great time. Obviously learning wears the Rat out completely, she hasn't moved today, at all!!! (Probably trying to figure out how to play a barre chord without thumbs (or fingers)).
To all the beginners, great song choices and PLEASE feel free to contact us if you want to get together independently, or in smaller groups or if you have any suggestions for meetup topics or venues.
Can't wait to do the next one.
The barre chords was a great lesson topic, thanx marian for bringing the songs. After last night I feel that I advanced more than I expected in my experience. Any beginner that was on the fence about this type of event, take my advise, just go!!!!
OK, OK! Sorry about the barre chords....didn't read the guidelines, I guess. But a great song anyway. This meetup was a blast and very helpful in so many ways! Thanks to Mike & Bev for hosting and for all who shared. Thanks to Robbie--we all learned a lot!
Thanks to all, and most especially to our gracious host Mike, hostess Bev and host puppy Lilly, who guarded the cases most excellently.
Good music, good fun and good munchies!
Idea: This is a pretty tech savvy crowd. I'm wondering if anyone has access to a video camera and digital projector.
If so, we might be able to show details what folks like Robbie are doing on a screen, wall or even sheet.
Now that would be a training session! (Or quite possibly just delusions of grandeur.)
I had a great time at this meetup! It was nice meeting everyone. Thanks to Mike and Bev for hosting, and thanks to Doug, Steve and Robbie for sharing your knowledge. I'll be at the open mic tonight, and hope to get to more meetups soon.
A big *special* "Thank You" goes out to Robbie McLean! Robbie loves to share his knowledge and it shows. As Robbie said, in the near future he will be leading other beginners workshops. Keep an eye on the calendar. Thanks again Robbie!
We scratched the surface of some intermediate stuff (7ths and Barre Chords). I'm sure it was tough to keep up if you've never heard of or used these but I think its good to "stretch" your knowledge & abilities. Maybe we can all practice "Octopus' Garden" between beginners jams and be able to nail the song next time!
Give us your feedback, we'd love to know how to make these Jams better!
I had a blast! Thanks Mike & Bev for giving us the space and providing the munchies. I hope the beginners "Sessions" continues. I even picked up a new song to add to my growing collection, and I have 12 years plus under my belt. You are never to old or good to learn something new. I really hope everyone felt comfortable. Next time we should REALLY leave out the bar chords and 7ths etc. OPEN CHORDS ONLY, who knows, maybe even an intermediate session or two.
Adam, no chair needed
Douglas, No So.Co. here (yuck), or shooter glasses (my drinks are usually much larger) but I could probably come up with some limes or lime juice. BYOB.
Sodas, sloppy joes & munchies will be available.
Hey gang....everyone still coming tomorrow? If not, please update your RSVP.
Mike.....You got any Southern Comfort at your house? Perhaps some limes or lime juice?
Hi ho Mike,
Do I need to bring a small folding chair?
Yay! I will be there guys. I know I have it but what is the address again just in case.
